Today is a very important day in the history of the United States of America. Without the Declaration of Independence there would be no USA. I happen to be a veery patriotic person and love the celebration of this date. Since it’s so important in our history, I thought Id share a few facts about it with you along with some pictures of different celebration. Enjoy!
The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.
The Declaration of Independence itself has become one of the most admired and copied political documents of all time. It was written by Thomas Jefferson and revised by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Jefferson. The Declaration of Independence is a justification of the American Revolution, citing grievances against King George III. It is also a landmark philosophical statement, drawing on the writings of philosophers John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau. It affirms that since all people are creatures of God, or nature, they have certain natural rights, or liberties, that cannot be violated. The Declaration and the American Revolution have since inspired freedom-seekers the around the world.
In 1777, on the first anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Philadelphia marked the day with fireworks, beginning the tradition that has grown over the last 200 years. John Adams, credited with suggesting “bells, bonfires, and illuminations,” for the event, would undoubtedly be thrilled and impressed with today’s pyrotechnic shows.
Fireworks, food, and patriotic music continue to be part of July 4 festivities throughout the United States, but beyond that, the observances differ as much as the locations themselves. From small towns to larger cities, citizens have created Independence Day celebrations that reflect their culture as well as their place in history. Visiting a new city during this all-American July holiday is an educational and enjoyable experience.
Fireworks, of course, are common to all, with an estimated 14,000 displays throughout the country, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association, which also indicated that 24.5 million pounds of explosives were detonated for displays in 2016. We never seem to tire of watching the sky with “oohs” and “ahhs” of surprise and appreciation.
At Williamsburg, VA, they have a noon reading of the Declaration of Independence, a special. military muster
So wherever you are today, have a very Happy Fourth of July and give thanks for our forefathers who created this great country of ours.
Happy 4th! 😀
