I always worry when I provide background information that I somehow got wrong, despite my research.. I apologize for any errors in the following.

I have been writing my heroes as SEALs in so many of my books lately. I am slo honored to be part of the Silver SEALs suspense series with a group of unbelievably great authors. I am also influenced by the historicity and character of Navy SEAL Jack Carr, who served his country and now shared what he learned in a gripping thriller series. (Don’t miss it!)

I thought I would provide a little background on who and what a SEAL is and invite you to plunge into the waters of my SEAL stories, Jack Carr’s series, and the Silver SEALs.

Navy SEALs are an Elite and Special Forces team, which works on ground and water assault. They are members of a special operations force trained to engage in direct raids or assaults on enemy targets, conduct reconnaissance missions to report on enemy activity (especially prior to beach landings), and take part in action against terrorist groups.

Active-duty SEAL teams are components of either Naval Special Warfare Group One, based at Coronado on the West Coast, or Naval Special Warfare Group Two, based at Little Creek, near Virginia Beach, Virginia, on the East Coast.

They have become a component of the on-going war against terrorism on a world-wide basis, yet, until recently, they have remained predominately and uniquely obscure. As in past conflicts, they prefer obscurity; however, unlike past conflicts, they have become increasingly a focus of national interest; particularly since the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk ship Alabama, and the raid at Abbottabad, Pakistan, where they killed Osama bin Laden the world’s foremost terrorist.

It is in their moments of truth when SEALs offer a glimpse into what makes them keep going through the kind of pain, fear, chaos and despair that would crush most of us. Their motivations often defy stereotypes. It’s not love of country, they say, that makes a man choose to shiver uncontrollably in the middle of the night or pursue a career that repeatedly puts his life at risk. It is the commitment that SEALs never quit.

And when they leave the service, they face big adjustments. Reconnecting with family. Building a new community without SEALs. Preparing to join the workforce. Dealing with the often shattering memories of missions.

In my own small way I choose to honor these men in the stories I write. I hope to show readers what extraordinary individuals they are and how fortunate we are to have them defending our country.
